Introduction

Southwest KC Minor Hockey Association (SWKC) Coaches are committed to focus on each player as individuals, knowing each player learns and is motivated differently. Each player will develop their hockey and skating skills with a positive team concept. Coaches are committed to promoting healthy competition and to optimize skill development for the enjoyment and success of all their players. They are committed to providing a safe and positive experience for the enjoyment of playing the game. Coaches will focus on the positive and instill an element of fun.

CERTIFICATIONS

As part of Hockey Alberta, all Minor Hockey Associations must ensure their teams meet the requirements outlined below by November 15th. Any Team that does not meet the requirements outlined is not an eligible team and is not able to participate in sanctioned games.

Once the certification deadline passes, any team that does not meet the required certifications for their Team Officials will be notified that they are ineligible to participate until they have obtained the proper certifications.

RESPECT IN SPORTS - COACHES

The Respect in Sport Program is an online certification program designed to protect our youth as well as enhance Hockey Alberta's mandate of providing a safe and fun environment for all of our participants. It is Canada's leading online bullying, abuse, harassment, and negligence prevention program for parents, coaches, and community leaders. It is offered in two different streams.

Hockey Alberta - Respect in Sport ACTIVITY LEADER/COACH/OFFICIALS
Provides in-depth information on the subjects of bullying, abuse, harassment and neglect. It demonstrates negative behaviours and provides ideas of how a situation may be best handled, including valuable information from subject matter experts delivered in a clear and concise fashion, and asks questions of the leaders based on the scenarios presented. Specific topics include: definitions of bullying, abuse, harassment, neglect and discrimination, cyber-bullying, hazing, use of power, emotions, how to respond, reporting, moral and legal issues, and development.

For the Good of the Game program developed be Edmonton Minor Hockey Association to promote and honour the values of fun, respect and positive development in the game of hockey for our children. As leaders of Southwest KC Minor Hockey Association (SWKC), it is our responsibility to ensure all players and members are aware of the program and the effects of unacceptable behavior.

Parents and coaches will serve as positive role models and are asked to consider their behaviour and how their behaviour impacts players during games and practices. The players themselves will strive to do their best at all times while having fun.

Referees will also serve an important role as leaders on the ice with fair play as the objective. Keep in mind that we all participate in the game of hockey because it is a sport and it is fun! We will succeed if we all have respect for one another.

What is Unacceptable Behaviour? An individual is considered to be displaying unacceptable behavior if they are verbally or physically harassing and/or abusing a game participant (player, coach or official).

Is your concern about a Referee?

Many concerns about refereeing do not fall within the framework of ‘For the Good of the Game’. Disputes or objections concerning the conduct of referees which do not meet the above definition of ‘Unacceptable Behaviour, should be sent to the North Zone Referee’s Association.

INJURY POLICY

In the event of an injury, a Hockey Canada Injury Report Form must be completed and mailed to Hockey Alberta along with any attachments at the following address:

Hockey Canada Injury Reports must be submitted within 90 days of the date of injury in order for a claim for expenses to be made. The Hockey Canada Insurance program is the secondary insurer which requires any claim to be submitted first to any other plan available through an employer or independent provider.

TRAVEL/EVENT POLICY & PROCEDURE

POLICE CHECK POLICY & FORM

The Police Information Check is a requirement from Southwest KC Minor Hockey Association (SWKC) for individuals seeking to work with children.

One of the tools SWKC can use to ensure the safety of our children is to require a Police Information Check of any adult who plans to be a part of the training or coaching staff of one of our teams this season. It is mandatory and no individual will be assigned to a team unless an application is completed prior to Head Coach selections. All persons interested in helping as trainers or assistant coaches must also submit an application. There is no cost to you for this process as the fee is paid for by SWKC.

A Police Information Check is an effective tool for volunteer organizations assessing risk and determining suitability of prospective volunteers. A Police Information Check conducted by the Edmonton Police Service contains the following information, which is provided on a letter with the Edmonton Police Service seal:

Criminal convictions, as provided by the Canadian Police Information Center (CPIC)
Charges pending or presently before the courts, as provided by the Alberta Justice Online Network (JOIN)
Edmonton Police Local Records - This may include information relating to a suspected criminal offence without charges. For example, an individual identified as a suspect in a sexual offence but not charged, will not be shown on a criminal record check, but will be appear on a police information check.

The results of a Police Information Check are only disclosed to the applicant. A Police Information Check only provides the information required for a volunteer organization to make an informed decision regarding the suitability of an applicant and should not be the only factor accounted for when considering an applicant for volunteer purposes.

TEAM OFFICIALS REGISTRATION

Registration for Coaches and Managers is open ONLINE effective June 1 of each calendar year and is completed through the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR).

Reminder: All Coaches must be registered prior to any on ice activities.

Either create a new account or use your existing account when you registered your child to login. There is also an option if you have forgotten your password for the system to email you your password.
Either register yourself if you see your name or register as a participant and fill in your information
You’ll be prompted with the following questions:
- Bench Staff, Manager, Coach, or Safety
Fill out participant information
- Select “Guardian” for your primary contact
Waiver approval and check out

Once you’ve registered successfully, you should notice your name under “My Registration History” on the home page of your account.

Southwest KC Registrar will automatically receive your confirmation and will verify your qualifications.

SAFETY MANAGER

Southwest KC Minor Hockey Association (SWKC) is committed to ensuring the safety of our players on ice and off the ice recognized as integral to the success of our organization. Each team must have one (1) person as the Team Safety manager who has completed the Hockey Canada Safety Program and is able to attend all games and practices. The Safety Manager is responsible to have the first aid kit available at all games and practices and will assist players if an injury is to occur.

Hockey Canada Safety Program (HCSP) is a four-hour online program referred to as “Hockey University - Online Safety”. The program introduces team safety, injury recognition and important information to fulfil the Safety Manager role. From the Fair Play Code and Code of Ethics, to Safety at the Rink, Injury Management and the Emergency Action Plan, this program gives you the information and confidence needed to be the go-to-person on your team for health, wellness, injury recognition, safe and proper recovery and return to play procedures.
